Job Description and Duties

Under the administrative direction of the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and the administrative and legal direction of the Chief Assistant Attorney General (CAAG) of the Civil Law Division, the Senior Assistant Attorney General (SAAG) plans, organizes, and directs the work of Correctional Law Section staff statewide within the Civil Law Division of the Department of Justice. The Correctional Law Section serves as litigation counsel for the Governor, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the Division of Juvenile Justice, the Board of Parole Hearings, the Department of Finance, and the Department of State Hospitals in civil actions brought by state prisoners and parolees. The SAAG is responsible for the supervision of the section; serves as the Attorney General’s principal liaison and point of contact for legal services with the section’s clients; serves as technical and legal advisor to the Attorney General on matters within the section’s legal program, and on legal issues impacting the Department; represents the Attorney General before the courts, the Legislature, the public, and the section’s clients; consults with the CAAG in the development and formulation of legal and litigation policy and program objectives, personnel management, and employee utilization; has principal responsibility for the section’s personnel and employee utilization; provides direction and guidance to subordinates through supervising deputy structure; may personally assist subordinates in complex and sensitive litigation; and prepares annual budget requests and performs ongoing programmatic monitoring and reporting functions.

Telecommuting options may be available. While the position’s location is specified as statewide, the candidate selected for appointment can be headquartered in one of our offices in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego or San Francisco counties. Regardless of the headquarter location, the candidate will be expected to travel throughout California as required, and out-of-state travel may be required.
