HEAVY DUTY DIESEL MECHANIC
Under general supervision the Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic assigned to the Fleet
Operations Division of the General Services Department will perform duties related to
the preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the City’s medium/heavy duty
trucks, on/off road equipment, including but not limited to emergency vehicles, park
maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (both stationary and
mobile). Work is performed on vehicles and equipment that is owned by the City of
Detroit.
Examples of Duties
• Follow all safety procedures within local, state, and federal guidelines.
• Ensure a clean and safe work environment.
• Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment such as
computerized diagnostic devices and engine analyzers.
• Staying up to date with continual education and new technology.
• Participation in training sessions, workshops, & courses to manage and advance
skills.
• Recommend preventive maintenance for equipment to ensure optimal
performance and reduce down time.
• Preventative maintenance shall include but is not limited to checking and
changing oil and filters, lubing and greasing specified areas, checking fluids,
inspecting & adjusting brakes and steering.
• Inspect parts for wear and damage
• Repair or replace faulty parts, including engines, transmissions, brakes, steering,
wheel bearings, and electrical components.
• Repair or replace components on winches such as cables, ropes, and gears.
• Repair, replace, install, and overhaul on/off road equipment, medium/heavy duty
trucks, and related component parts such as diesel, gasoline, electric, alternative
fuel engines, carburetors, fuel injection systems, transmissions, hydraulic, and
electrical systems.
• Maintenaning and repairs of hydraulic pumps, pneumatics, reservoirs, actuators,
hoses, pumps, valves, and controls.
• Repair and maintenance of motors shall include but is not limited to hoses,
cylinders, power sources, accumulators, relief valves.
• Maintenance of after-treatment components shall include but are not limited to
diagnostic and repair of diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate
filter(DPF), diesel exhaust fluid injection(DEF), and selective catalyst reduction
(SCR). Page 9 of 11
• Repair and maintenance of braking systems shall include but are not limited to,
(air) compressors, brake chambers, drums, slack adjusters, dryers, air tank, foot
valves, brake lines, safety valves, master cylinder, wheel cylinder, rotors, brakes
boosters, calipers, and related sensors.
• Diagnose mechanical and emissions failures shall include but are not limited to,
pumps, converters, air circulation systems, either visually or by using electronic
testing instruments.
• Repairing and rebuilding of engines shall include but are not limited to, replacing
head gaskets, water pumps, and vacuum pumps.
• Repair of differentials and drive systems shall include but are not limited to, axles,
tandem axles, jake brake, seals, and bearing.
• Repairs and maintenance of fuel injection systems shall include but are not
limited to, injectors, filters, tanks, lines, sensors, engine valves, pumps, and other
major heavy equipment components.
Requirements
The preferred candidate must posses the abilitly to perform specified tasks on the
computerized system; diagnose and locate mechanical and safety problems, and
determine appropriate corrective action. The capability to repair, replace, and overhaul
on/off road heavy equipment and medium/heavy trucks, including emergency vehicles,
man lift vehicles, park maintenance equipment, road maintenance equipment,
construction equipment, generators (both stationary and mobile), and related
component parts without supervision. Possess the ability to operate hand tools such as
electrical testing instruments. The ability to read and write English, interpret
manufacturers' specifications, use computer to organize dates and generate reports,
perform arithmtic calculations, follow oral and written instructions. A qualified
candidate is able to work effectively with customers and vendors; operate in various
working environments, weather conditions, and on weekends.
JOB PREREQUISITES, LICENSES, & CERTIFICATIONS
• Must be presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
• State of Michigan Class "B" commercial driver's license (with B endorsement) is
preferred.
• Must be State certified in 2 or more of the following:
• HD Engine Repair
• HD Braking Systems
• HD Suspension & Steering Systems

Special Requirements: Posses small and large hand tools, rolling tool storage, and
power/air tools necessary to perform all assigned work.
