Organizer

Based in Corvallis, OR

United Academic of Oregon State University, AAUP-AFT Local 9606 is hiring a full-time Organizer to help us continue building our union with a goal start date of September 2, 2025.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Organizer will report directly to the Executive Council. The Organizer will work with the Co-Executive Directors, the Executive Council, Bargaining Team, and union committees to advance union programs and objectives, mainly related to membership organizing. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Organizing internally to build relationships with faculty by having one-on-one conversations using various forms of communication including visiting with faculty at their place of work, in homes, or wherever is convenient for the faculty member
  • Recruiting new members and activists, maintaining records of member contact and updating membership database, and assisting with turn-out to meetings and events
  • Coordinating organizing strategy with the Organizing Committee and Executive Council
  • Assisting the Executive Council and other committees as necessary 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

  • Technical skills: email, word processing, and spreadsheets 
  • High school diploma or equivalent


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • At least one-year grassroots organizing experience
  • Familiarity with institutions of higher education, and relevant faculty issues, policies, and legislation at the local, state, and federal level
  • A demonstrated commitment to empower workers through the labor movement
  • Experience working with unions 
  • Experience working with volunteer leadership

JOB ENVIRONMENT: 
The majority of the work will take place in the UAOSU office and in and around the Corvallis campus but may include travel to Bend, Newport, and/or other locations in Oregon, as needed. 

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a full-time salaried position. Compensation is salaried based on 1.0 FTE (about forty hours per week) with an annual salary rate starting at $60,000 depending on relevant experience. Benefits include family health insurance, retirement benefits, paid vacation, and paid holidays. 
The normal workweek is Monday–Friday. Specific work hours within that range are flexible, based on the needs of UAOSU and its employees. Evening and weekend work may be required to accommodate members’ schedules.
