Research Associate II – Neuroanatomy

Using a big science approach, we generate useful public resources, drive technological and analytical advances, and discover fundamental brain properties through integration of experiments, modeling and theory.

As a member of the Neuroanatomy team, this Research Associate will perform duties integral to the Cell Types research program at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. Primary responsibilities include reconstructing neuronal morphologies, quality control of large-scale imaging data sets, identifying brain structures using reference atlases, adjusting and drawing 3D anatomical boundaries for structures, and working with Neuroscientists on various projects that help to integrate morphologies across modalities. This position requires a strong interest in learning detailed neuronal morphologies and brain anatomy, and the desire to work in a fast-paced team environment on large scientific projects.

Essential Functions

  • Create 3D reconstructions of neuronal morphologies
  • Identify brain structures using reference atlases
  • Adjust and draw 3D anatomical boundaries for structures
  • Quality control of imaging data sets
  • Document data in LIMS and other electronic files
  • Present research results to the group
  • Contribute to and execute SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
  • Perform various data analysis duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science, life science, or related field
  • 2 years of related experience
  • Basic knowledge and interest in mammalian neuroanatomy and/or neurobiology
  • Intermediate ability with Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience or Neurobiology
  • Experience reconstructing neurons
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System
  • Strong organization skills and careful attention to detail
  • Self-motivated, good work ethic, and enthusiasm
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • Experience working in a timeline and milestone-driven work environment
  • Experience with Python, Photoshop, Image J, Neurolucida, or other reconstructing software

Work Environment

  • May enter laboratory environment, including potential exposure to lasers, biohazards

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements for operating computers and lab equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently working onsite and is expected to work onsite for the majority of working hours. The primary work location for this role is 615 Westlake Ave N.

Annualized Salary Range

  • $65,500 - $80,150*

* Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
